Wales Fertility Institute: An important announcement.

Swansea Bay University Health Board is notifying patients that it is pausing new IVF treatment at Neath Port Talbot Hospital for a temporary period of four weeks because the centre is currently unable to meet the regulatory requirements needed to start new treatments due to absence within key areas of the workforce.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) – the licensing body – has asked us to continue with existing treatments but to pause new treatments temporarily while these regulatory requirements cannot be met. There are no safety related issues – the issues are regulatory.

We are therefore temporarily pausing new treatments for four weeks.  Existing patients already undergoing active treatment are unaffected.  There is also no impact on gametes and embryos in storage.

We are writing to all of our patients clarifying their status.

We want to emphasise that we appreciate this pause will be disappointing and the uncertainty may be upsetting. We recognise that the pause will be particularly upsetting to those who have agreed treatment plans but who have not yet started their treatment. We are very sorry and we are doing everything we can to resolve the situation.

We are liaising with the all-Wales NHS Joint Commissioning Committee (the organisation that commissions us to deliver this service) to explore whether there are any alternative options available should the situation continue beyond the short term. We are hopeful, however, that won’t be the case.

We really do understand the concern this temporary pause will cause and once again, we are very sorry - we are working hard to resolve the situation and will update further as soon as we are able to.

Minor Injury Unit

Due to ongoing staffing pressures we have made the difficult decision to temporarily reduce the opening hours of the Minor Injury Unit at Neath Port Talbot Hospital.It is now available from 8am until 9pm, seven days a week, for a period of nine months, rather than the previous times of 7.30am-11pm.

Anyone needing urgent attention that cannot wait until the following day should use 111 or, if it is serious enough, the Emergency Department at Morriston Hospital.

The Minor Injury Unit is an important part of Swansea Bay’s urgent and emergency care services. We have no intention of making this a permanent change and we are recruiting additional staff. We are working closely with Llais, the independent organisation which represents the views of health and social care service users and patients across Wales.

Previously, we have had to close the MIU early at short notice on several occasions. This caused difficulties for patients who turned up expecting to be seen only to have to go to Morriston Hospital instead. On average, five patients a day attended the MIU between 9pm and 11pm. Closing temporarily at 9pm allows us to provide a sustainable service, with the least impact on patients. We hope you will understand the reasons for the change. Be assured we are doing all we can to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.

Please note the MIU is for minor injuries only and cannot treat serious illnesses or serious injuries. It cannot deal with patients with an illness, suspected heart attack, chest pains or stroke.
