What support is available after stroke?

We have a stroke specific early discharge team, who can help those patients who are suitable to leave hospital a bit sooner. They provide intensive therapy and support for six weeks.
I do the six-month stroke follow up, but I try and speak to survivors over the phone by two months post discharge as I feel six months is too long to wait. All the stroke patients get a pack when they leave the hospital with my details.
We do a Life After Stroke clinic every Monday and Wednesday with either Dr Thomas or Dr Slade the stroke consultants. But my service is life long and they can contact me at any point of their stroke journey.
Fatigue after stroke can make a trip to the supermarket feel like running a marathon. I always say to survivors that it’s about doing what you can and living a normal life, but not overdoing it so you feel wiped out.
I am here to help them find that balance.
There are also stroke support groups, which I recommend to patients. Speaking to others who have been through the same thing or very similar helps you to feel less alone and you’ll also find out about the little techniques others have developed to help.
