Introduction

Our Neurorehabilitation ward helps people recover and regain their abilities after a brain injury or neurological condition. Our goal is to improve functioning, such as moving, speaking, thinking, and performing everyday tasks. Patients receive personalised care from a team of specialists. The ward focuses on both physical and mental recovery, offering therapy to improve strength, coordination, and thinking skills. Our aim is to help patients live as independently as possible.

Before admission to the NRU, it’s important for patients and their families to understand that recovery can be slow and varies for each person. Many patients spend weeks or months on a rehab ward before leaving hospital. Progress may happen in small steps, and not all abilities may return fully.

Setting realistic expectations helps reduce frustration and supports patient journeys. The focus is on improving quality of life and independence. Many people leave hospital with symptoms that then continue to improve in a new setting. Some symptoms may be life-long.

Some people continue their rehabilitation at home. Other people need specialist residential or nursing accommodation.

Family support is crucial—being involved, asking questions, and celebrating small achievements makes a big difference. Be prepared for emotional ups and downs, and take care of your own well-being too.
