There are several health professionals you may see during your treatment process. These include but are not limited to;
You may see a consultant clinical oncologist before at consent, during and after your course of Radiotherapy. Sometimes you may see a doctor from their team instead, such as a registrar. They are also very experienced in treating cancer. They specialise in planning and overseeing your course of treatment.
Therapeutic radiographers are experts in radiotherapy and are specially trained to give you your treatment and CT planning scan. They can also give you support, advice and information about your radiotherapy. There are both female and male radiographers who will be involved in your treatment.
It is easy to spot a Radiographer in the department as they wear black scrubs.
Throughout your treatment you may also see our Review Radiographers who specialise in side effects and the management.
Radiotherapy Physics use advanced computer calculations to develop individual patient treatment plans. They take the CT scan you have and plan the treatment beams used to treat the tumour, making sure that the radiation dose to surrounding tissue is minimised.
Nurses within our department have expert knowledge about the type of cancer you have and its side effects. They will often chat to you if you have to take oral chemotherapy for your Radiotherapy treatment. They are sometimes called a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) or an advanced nurse practitioner.
You may see a dietician once a week during your treatment if we are treating an area that will cause you to struggle to eat. They can give you information and advice about food and food supplements.
Depending on which type of cancer that you have you may see a Speech and Language Therapist. They can give you information and support if you have problems talking and swallowing.
Southwest Wales Cancer Centre is a teaching hospital so you will see Medical and Radiotherapy students throughout your time in the department.
These students will be in light grey scrubs or navy trousers and white tunics with their university name badge displayed. Students are supervised by trained members of staff but if you don’t want a student present in your treatment, please let a member of staff know. Both male and female students may be present. It is important to mention to staff if you are not comfortable with a student being present.
