I was appointed as Clinical Director for the cleft team in 2018. I am delighted to lead such a dedicated team of staff. Matt Fell Consultant Cleft Surgeon
Mr Matt Fell
Cleft Surgeon

It was a great honour to be appointed in 2024 as Consultant Cleft and Plastic Surgeon for the Welsh Centre for Cleft Lip and Palate and be a part of this team. I undertake the primary surgical management of children referred to the centre and help to care for patients and their families from antenatal diagnosis through to adulthood.

I qualified from Manchester University Medical School in 2011 and undertook initial surgical training in London and South Africa before completing Plastic Surgery specialty training in Exeter and Bristol in 2022. I undertook specialist Cleft and Craniofacial fellowship training at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia in 2023 before completing the nationally appointed Cleft Lip and Palate Training Interface Group (TIG) Fellowship at the Spires Cleft Centre in Oxford and Salisbury in 2024.

Following a research training fellowship with the Cleft Collective at the University of Bristol in 2020, I remain actively involved in cleft research and have enjoyed forging collaborations both locally and further afield. I am committed to training surgeons and wider cleft team members of the future. Being able to contribute to cleft care in low resource settings is extremely important to me and I am currently a Trustee for the CLEFT charity Click here to go to Cleft.org.uk and have an advisory role for Transforming Faces Click Here to go to Transformingfaces.org

I trained as a children’s nurse in 1989 in Great Ormond Street and returned to work on the children’s ward in Neath General Hospital, looking after sick children with general paediatric illness. Whilst working in Neath I was fortunate to undertake the reconstructive surgical module in Chepstow Hospital.

I became sister on the children’s ward in Morriston in 1993, where I worked for 7 years looking after babies and children having cleft surgery, until I undertook my community nursing degree in 2000. On completing my degree, I worked as a children’s community nurse in Swansea.

I was fortunate to secure my current role as Specialist Cleft Nurse in 2001. Whilst working as a cleft nurse I undertook the cleft nursing course in Nottingham.

I feel privileged to have worked as the Lead Cleft Nurse for nearly 20 years looking after babies and their families going through their cleft journey.

Emma Gregory Cleft CNS
Emma Rees
Clinical Nurse Specialist

I began to train as a paediatric nurse in 1999 and most of this time has been spent in Swansea Bay University Health board, but I have visited several other Hospitals in Wales as part of my career. During this time to date I have gained various nursing skills predominantly in the Women and Child Health Departments that provide care to children within Swansea Bay. In 2007 I furthered my education by undertaking the Community Health Studies Degree and gained skills that were transferable in all settings.

I  have always wanted to be part of the cleft lip and palate team from being a junior staff member providing pre and post-operative care to children. At the start of 2024, my dream journey with the Cleft Team began. I am compassionate, motivated, ambitious and hardworking. I believe I have nurtured these skills over time and will continue to develop  as part of the Welsh Centre for Cleft Lip and Palate, providing care for children and families who are born with a cleft lip and/or palate.
