4. Will the vaccine protect my child?

The Covid vaccinations will reduce the chance of your child suffering from severe Covid disease and help provide some short-term protection against infection.

Protection against severe disease is expected to be good and lasts much longer.

It may take a few weeks for your child’s body to build up some protection from the vaccine. Like all medicines, no vaccine is completely effective – some people may still get Covid despite having a vaccination, but this should be less severe.

The vaccines do not contain organisms that grow in the body, and so are safe for children with disorders of the immune system. These people may not respond so well to the vaccine but it should offer them protection against severe disease.
