Maternity Services

Expecting the pitter patter of tiny feet? Congratulations! You are embarking on one of life's great journeys. But while this can be a wonderful time, it is natural to feel some worry and uncertainty about what's to come. We know that where and how you give birth can have a huge effect on you mentally and physically. If you feel safe and calm this will release hormones which will help your labour progress and provide powerful pain relief. The time after birth is also crucial to your welfare and your baby's. On this page you'll find information about our services, plus much more.

Our midwife-led birth centres provide a home-from-home environment which allows you and, if you wish, your partner to enjoy those first precious moments with your new baby safe in the knowledge that our staff are on hand to provide support. We even have double beds and encourage partners to stay. However, you may wish to give birth at home and we can support this. Equally, if you or baby need extra clinical support, we have an obstetric unit at Singleton Hospital which is staffed by doctors and midwives. See links below for more information.

If you are pregnant and would like to use the Neath Port Talbot Hospital Birth Centre, talk to your community midwife and please remember to contact the centre on 01639 862103 prior to attending.

Important update 31.12.2024

Following Monday’s announcement from Swansea Bay regarding the current risk of circulating infection from Influenza the following will apply in Maternity and the Neonatal Special Care Baby Unit:

  • Birth partners will remain in place for all women admitted to our acute clinical wards with the usual visiting hours in place
  • Visiting will be limited to birth partners as described for the following areas:
    1. Labour ward – Two birthing partners will be allowed to visit on the central delivery suite or one birthing partner and siblings following the birth.
    2. Bay Birth Unit / Neath and Port Talbot Birth Centre - Two birthing partners will be allowed to visit and siblings will be allowed to visit following the birth
    3. Ward 19 Antenatal ward - One birthing partner between the hours of 10am and 8pm and visiting including siblings between the hours 4pm to 6pm, children must be accompanied by the birth partner. No more than 2 visitors at a time per bed.
    4. Ward 20 postnatal ward -   One birthing partner between the hours of 10am and 8pm and visiting including siblings between the hours 4pm to 6pm, children must be accompanied by the birth partner. No more than 2 visitors at a time per bed
    5. During home birth and community visits from our teams we politely ask that visitors at the home are kept to a minimum and rooms are well ventilated.
  • Women using our Antenatal Clinics, Day Assessment Units, Ultrasound Scan and Triage Assessment areas will be asked to only attend with their named birth partner
  • Neonatal Special Care Baby Unit will be limited to parents only, no children will be able to visit this unit due to the increased risk of infection to pre-term or unwell babies who are immunocompromised.

All staff and visitors (birth partners and children), as well as patients where appropriate, are asked to wear masks at all times.

Hand cleansing stations are at the entrance to our ward areas and we ask that you ensure that you have used the gel to cleanse your hands on entering and leaving the ward areas.

These measure can reduce the risk of transmitting viruses and help minimise the risk of anyone carrying a virus passing it on to others.

Anyone who has been in contact with confirmed influenza or who has flu-like symptoms should not attend the hospital sites to help minimise the risk of transmitting infection.

If you are pregnant and you have been in contact with a confirmed influenza case or you have flu-like symptoms we do request you still contact us with any concerns so that your assessment or review can be arranged in a single cubicle.

If you have any concerns please speak to your community midwife who will support you with your enquires.

Thank you for your support in working with us to minimise the current risk and in minimising any disruption to your pregnancy and birth with us in Swansea Bay.
