Vestibular Assessment

Some types of dizziness or balance disturbance are related to a problem in the inner ear. You may have been referred for an assessment of ‘vestibular function’ if you have reported dizziness or imbalance to a GP, ENT Consultant, Neurology Consultant or Elderly Care Consultant.

During a typical assessment you will be asked lots of questions about your symptoms, and the clinician will decide which tests will be most helpful in establishing whether or not your symptoms are due to a disturbance of the balance organ in your inner ear.

Results and any suggestions for management of your symptoms will be discussed at the end of the appointment.

Vestibular Rehabilitation

If it has been identified that your symptoms may benefit from a course of exercises, you will be offered an appointment for rehabilitation. During the appointment you may be asked further questions in order to establish the likelihood that you will benefit from a course of tailored exercises.

If it is felt that exercises may be helpful, you will be asked to trial a series of head, eye and/ or body movements. Your response to these will be noted, and a suitable set of exercises will be prescribed based on this.

Usually, you will then need to perform the exercises twice daily for 6-8 weeks in order to obtain optimum benefit from them, and we will arrange a telephone follow up appointment to check on your progress during this time.
