I don't provide personal care or support but I help maintain shielding for the person I care for, can I have the vaccine?

Unpaid carers who support others solely with things like shopping, financial planning and visits to support emotional well-being, but can socially distance and wear PPE while doing so, will not be prioritised for vaccination.

That’s not to say your role is any less valuable than someone who provides a more personal or physical type of care.

The Green Book definition and Welsh Government factors/criteria are being used to make sure we prioritise those people who look after others who are medically vulnerable to COVID-19, and rely on a carer who has to come into lots of physical contact with them every day to support them.

If this carer was to fall ill with COVD-19, there would also be a serious impact on the availability of necessary care for the person they support.

It’s important to remember that everyone over the age of 16 in the UK will be offered a COVID-19 vaccine by July 31st 2021. Including unpaid carers in group 6 is a way of making sure those who are most vulnerable to COVID-19 are protected from the virus as soon as possible, and that those who care for them are able to continue their support.
