Workshops give teens a taste of potential physiotherapy careers

Physiotherapy workshop

Teenagers got a taste of what a career in physiotherapy involves thanks to a workshop at Morriston Hospital.

The special event was aimed at 14 – 17-year-olds with an interest in the work of physiotherapists, who help people affected by injury or disability manage pain and prevent disease through movement, exercise, and therapy.

The event featured presentations from experienced therapists who work with a range of patient groups, and outlined the training involved and scope of practice of a qualified physiotherapist.

It was also an interactive session, with youngsters taking part in discussions and practical demonstrations.

Students and other representatives from Cardiff University were also on hand to offer valuable insights into how to apply and study for a career in physiotherapy.

Senior physiotherapist Vicki Evans said: “It was a great opportunity for us to promote our profession and for the students to gain a better understanding of our role. Hopefully, we have inspired some of our local students to become Physiotherapists and, who knows, maybe they will come and work with us in the future.”

The workshop at the hospital’s Education Centre was free and open to students living in the Swansea Bay catchment area.

15-year-old Joe Williams added: “I’ve been interested in finding out more about exactly what is involved in physiotherapy, as it’s something I might want to pursue as career.

“The presentations were a chance to learn more and it was helpful listening to students as well as the qualified physiotherapists, to get their take on what it takes.”

The workshop runs once or twice each year and is advertised on the Swansea Bay website.
