A showcase workshop for people interested in an NHS career as an occupational therapist will take place this autumn.
It will be held in Port Talbot Resource Centre, Baglan, on Tuesday 15th October, and will be open to anyone aged 15 and over.
Swansea Bay’s occupational therapists (OTs) have held these events for more than 11 years.
Feedback has always been very positive. Many people have said that attending the workshop helped them determine their career choice – and some have returned as qualified OTs.
Occupational therapists help people of all ages overcome challenges so they can do the things they want to do, ranging from going to work to simply doing the dishes.
This gives them a renewed sense of purpose, changing the way they feel about their future by opening up new opportunities.
October’s event will be hosted by qualified OTs who work in a range of clinical settings across the health board.
Their practice areas included physical health, learning disabilities, mental health, paediatrics, pulmonary rehabilitation and head injury.
They will discuss their experiences, as they got into the profession in various ways and qualified in different universities.
OT Aimee Collier-Rees, who is co-organising the workshop, said: “The workshops are informative and interactive.
“They cover the scope of how occupational therapy theory and philosophy align with working as a qualified OT in the NHS.
“Routes to training in university are discussed along with a brief overview of the course curriculum, and there are a few top tips for applying.
“People who have attended previous courses came from a diverse mix of backgrounds, from college students to those looking for a career change.”
The OT workshops are recognised as pre-registration learning with the BSc courses at both Swansea and Cardiff universities.
To book your place at the workshop, which runs from 10am-3.30pm, email aimee.collier-rees@wales.nhs.uk or sarah.gates@wales.nhs.uk. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
