Vaccinations

Covid-19 vaccination is strongly recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

The Covid-19 vaccines currently available in the UK have been shown to be effective and have a good safety record. It is important that pregnant women are fully vaccinated as soon as possible to protect themselves and their babies.

Go to this page on the Public Health Wales website for more information on the Covid vaccine in pregnancy, including frequently asked questions and a case study.

Pertussis, more commonly known as whooping cough, causes a nasty cough which can last for a couple of months. Adults and children can catch it. It is potentially very serious for young children, especially babies under six months old.

Pregnant women are offered the pertussis vaccination so they pass on immunity to their baby, protecting them until they can have their first routine vaccinations at eight weeks old.

Catching the flu while pregnant can lead to serious illness and increased risks for mum and baby.

Pregnant women are advised to get the flu vaccine during the autumn and winter.

RSV

RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) is a common cause of respiratory tract infections. For most adults and children, RSV infection causes a mild illness, such as a cough or cold, which usually gets better on its own. However, for some, especially babies under one year of age and older adults, RSV can be very serious and can cause bronchiolitis and pneumonia. At least half of all children have RSV in the first year of life and almost all will have had it by the time they are two.

You can help protect your baby against RSV from birth by having the RSV vaccination while you are pregnant.
