How do I get into and out of a car as a passenger?

  • Push the seat as far back as it will go and recline it.
  • If possible, get into the car from a drive or the road rather than the pavement.
  • Step backwards to the car until you feel it touching the back of your legs.
  • Get into the car with your bottom first. Using your hands, gently lower yourself down.  Remember to keep your operated leg straight out in front of you.
  • Slide backwards over the seat until your bottom is near the driver’s seat. This allows more room to get your legs into the car. Recline the seat if needed.
  • Turn towards the dashboard and lean backward as you lift your operated leg into the car.
  • Take care- Do not flex your hip past 90 degrees or cross your midline.
  • To get out of the car, do the same procedure in reverse.
