Heart failure (HF) is a frightening term. It doesn't mean your heart has stopped working. However it may need support to help it work better. Heart Failure means that your heart isn’t pumping blood around your body as well as it should.
Heart failure is common, affecting 1-2% of the population and is the leading cause of acute hospital admission in patients over 65. There are more than 1 million people diagnosed with heart failure in the UK and this is increasing with our ageing population.
In 80% of cases, the diagnosis occurs in hospital, despite 40% of patients experiencing symptoms that could have prompted an earlier review which might have prevented the admission. By diagnosing people with HF early, getting them the specialist care they need and joining up services, it is possible to reduce unnecessary emergency admissions to hospital, improve quality of life and give people the opportunity to live well for longer.
As a Heart Failure Service covering Swansea Bay University Health Board, we are dedicated to providing excellent specialised support to people living with heart failure.
