Information about renal outpatients clinics

Renal outpatient clinics during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak: Information for patients

Due to the increasing number of cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) across the UK, we are trying to reduce the number of people coming into hospital to avoid catching or spreading the virus. This includes outpatient appointments for people with kidney disease. We will continue to care for you throughout the outbreak, but we will be doing things differently. As you know, Government advice can change day-to-day, so the information in this letter and our advice may also change. We will keep you informed of any changes.

The changes we are making:

Attending appointments in-person will stop unless essential. The number of people in clinic will be kept to a minimum. Before your routine appointment the renal doctor will decide whether you need to attend. We will contact you by telephone or by writing a letter to you before your scheduled appointment.

If your in-person clinic appointment is to continue:

Please attend clinic as planned if you are able. Please arrive just before your appointment time in order to avoid congestion in the waiting area. You will have a blood test. If you collect medication from the Renal Medicines Service you will be supplied with these in clinic as usual.

If your in-person clinic appointment is cancelled or changed to a telephone appointment:

We will contact you in advance to cancel your appointment or to arrange a telephone appointment. If the doctor has arranged a date and time for a telephone appointment, please be ready for the call.

The doctor may ask for you to have a blood test. If you need a blood test we will post a blood form to you. If you are able, you should have your blood test the week of, or the week after, you receive the blood form from us.

When you have had the blood test please contact us.

  1. Because this is a very busy time, we would prefer you to contact us by email. Please send an email to this email address telling us that you have had a blood test. Please include your name and date of birth in the email: abm.renalmedicinesService@wales.nhs.uk
  2. If you are unable to send an email, please send us an SMS text message telling us that you have had a blood test. Please include your name and date of birth in the SMS text message: 07860017368
  3. If you are unable to send an email or SMS text message you can call your renal consultant’s secretary. The telephone numbers are on the next page.

You can have a blood test in your local hospital or GP surgery. A phlebotomist is currently available to take blood in the renal department in Morriston Hospital on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings and on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Please note that this may change.

When the renal doctor has checked your blood test results they may write to you or contact you by telephone if changes are needed. They will try and contact you promptly after reviewing your blood test result.

The renal doctor will then make an appointment for your next clinic. We don’t know how long COVID-19 (coronavirus) will be a problem, so the next appointment may be in-person or on the telephone.
