My role - As a Behaviour Specialist I support young people with a learning disability and complex needs by assessing their behaviours, identifying triggers and developing individualised strategies to reduce distress and challenging behaviours. We also work to improve their communication, emotional regulation, and social skills. As a team, we train caregivers, teachers and support staff, using evidence-based approaches to ensure consistency in care across home, school, and other settings. Ultimately, our goal is to enhance the young person’s quality of life.
Past experience - My passion for becoming a nurse first started when my family fostered children with learning disabilities. Meeting some of the professionals involved in the child’s care help to educate me and enhanced my understanding and ability to care for the child. Today, I am proud to work in a service that supports children and young people who display challenging behaviour.
Hobbies and interests - I enjoy both playing and following rugby and cricket.
Education background - As a child I wasn’t particularly motivated by studying, but after leaving school and working in a day service supporting adults with a learning disability, I was inspired to further my education. This started with an Access to Health Studies course at Neath Port Talbot College, followed by training as a Learning Disability Nurse at the University of Glamorgan. Since qualifying, I have continued to learn and develop my skills, with a special focus on behaviour.
