SBUHB G-TEP - Support for staff trauma and stress

A logo for the SBUHB staff service, G-Tep

G-TEP is a gentle but powerful therapy adapted from *EMDR therapy (* Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing).  It is like washing your hands but instead for your mind – it helps to reduce distress from traumatic events you may have been exposed to over the past few months (in work or at home).  Events can be single events or a build-up of distress from routine work exposure (regardless of role, profession or banding).

Although the sessions are run on a group basis, there is no discussion of the traumatic event/s during the process. Each session will be for two hours, with a maximum of four people and is currently available at Morriston and Singleton Hospitals due to room availability.

It is suitable for all staff, who have experienced such episodes in the recent past only (e.g. of 1-6 months onset). It is designed to aid the natural recovery process and to help prevent more severe disorders such as PTSD from developing.

How to access

Please contact the Staff Advice & Support line (extension 44568, or 01639 684568, or email SBU.StaffWellbeing@wales.nhs.uk), where you will be allocated a brief 20 minute telephone appointment in order to complete some screening measures.  This is necessary to ensure this is the right intervention for your needs*.  Following this, information about how to book onto an available group will be given.

* If at the point of screening, it is identified that you would benefit from more intensive trauma support or input from another area of the service, this will be assessed and the options discussed.

Please note, there are some exclusion criteria where G-TEP would not be appropriate; Please follow this link to a PDF on 'Where G-TEP is not appropriate' for more information.
