Children, young people and the flu vaccine

Children aged 2-3 years old

Eligible children aged 2 and 3 years old will primarily receive their vaccine from their GP surgery.

They will be offered the fluenz nasal spray. 

Flu is caused by a virus that spreads easily through coughs and sneezes. Anyone can get it, but children are more likely to catch it and can become very unwell. Flu symptoms include a cough, sore throat, fever, body aches, headaches, and feeling very tired.

Several hundreds of children each year are hospitalised due to the flu.  With a number of these children needed treatment in intensive care.

Having a quick and painless nasal flu spray vaccine will help protect your child from catching flu. It will also help reduce the risk of them spreading flu to family and friends.

A gelatine-free flu injection is available if you would prefer your child to have this instead. Contact us so they don’t miss out. You can find more information on pork gelatine on the Public Health Wales website, by following this link.

Even if your child has been vaccinated before, their protection fades, and virus strains change over time. This is why they are being invited for another dose.

Children and young people in reception class to year 11

The school nursing team will offer the vaccine to all children/young people attending primary and secondary school.

They will be offered the fluenz nasal spray. 

Our school-based flu vaccination programme will be taking place from Monday 14th September to Wednesday 9th December across primary and secondary schools, from reception to year 11.

If you are a parent or guardian of a children not attending school, or your child has missed their school vaccination clinic, please contact your GP surgery to arrange vaccination.
