Over 5,000 patients have used our Common Ailments Scheme

Do you know there are 26 everyday conditions where you can get over-the-counter treatments for FREE at EVERY community pharmacy in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot? And if you need something a little stronger, these pharmacists have also had extra training to offer prescription medicines for these health problems. So you don’t need a GP appointment - you can just go to your local chemist.

The new Common Ailments Scheme has already helped well over 5,000 patients in our area, so don’t miss out. To access it, all you need to do is register with your local community pharmacy.

The 26 ailments covered in the scheme are: are acne, athlete’s foot, back pain, chickenpox, cold sores, colic, conjunctivitis, constipation, diarrhoea, dry eyes, dermatitis, haemorrhoids, hay fever, head lice, indigestion, in-growing toenails, ringworm, mouth ulcers, nappy rash, oral thrush, scabies, sore throat/tonsillitis, teething, threadworms, vaginal thrush, and verrucae.

Plus, since 1st December, a number of our pharmacies (20) now offer a see and treat service for sore throats. It’s totally free, and no appointment is necessary. (However, depending on the availability of the pharmacist some patients may need to wait to be seen.)

You'll be offered a while-you-wait throat swab test to determine if it's a bacterial or viral infection that's causing your sore throat.

If it is bacterial, you may be prescribed antibiotics there and then. If it's viral, antibiotics won't work so you may be offered painkillers instead. The pharmacist will have a chat with you to agree the best way forward.

Again, it means you won't need to make an appointment to see your GP, because these pharmacies can see and treat you directly for your sore throat.

Here’s the full list of pharmacies currently offering the sore throat service. (Others are planning to come on board in 2020, and we’ll keep you updated.)
