A doctor who has spent almost half a century helping amputees has received a lifetime achievement award.

Ian Massey is an Advanced Prosthetist within the Artificial Limb & Appliance Service, having begun his career as a prosthetic technician in Cardiff in 1975, since when he has become one of the most influential figures in prosthetics in Wales and across the UK.

Throughout his career, he has championed innovation and service improvement, continually seeking better outcomes for patients and driving the adoption of ground-breaking technologies, including microprocessor knee systems and advanced prosthetic solutions.

“This award is thoroughly deserved and reflects a lifetime of dedication, innovation and patient-centred care.”

His influence has also extended into education, mentorship and professional development, supporting and inspiring generations of prosthetists throughout the UK.

Beyond his clinical and professional achievements, Ian has made a lasting contribution to veterans' healthcare through his longstanding voluntary work with BLESMA, the support charity for service veterans who have lost limbs, and the Armed Forces community. His efforts have helped improve access to specialist prosthetic services, technology and multidisciplinary support for veterans across Wales.
