A Bridgend-based choir has delivered a boost to a charity which supports vulnerable new mothers and families.

Maternal Harmony’s annual concert at Archbishop McGrath Comprehensive School, was a sell-out success, raising £1,000 for Bridgend Baby Basics.

The charity, based in Cefn Cribbwr, works alongside midwives, health visitors and other professional bodies to restore dignity to women and provide starter packs for vulnerable groups, such as teenage mums, asylum seekers and women fleeing domestic violence and trafficking.

Sarah Edwards of Bridgend Baby Basics said: “This money, along with our new larger room at Bethlehem Church Life Centre, will help us expand and reach even more vulnerable babies and families in our community.

“Our starter packs include a Moses basket packed full of toiletries and baby essentials such as nappies, wipes, blankets and baby clothes. For some, these are the only items they have for their child.

“All items donated are done without judgement and with love and support from one mother to another.”

Maternal Harmony was originally set up by the Perinatal Response and Management Services (PRAMS) at Princess of Wales Hospital and aimed at women with postnatal depression.

It also welcomes those with other mental health issues, their family members or anyone who just wants to support the cause.

Choir member Debbie Emment said: “We heard through health visitors about the amazing work Sarah was doing at the charity.

“As a choir, we made the unanimous decision to donate as we thought it was so fantastic that she was helping mums in need at one of the most vulnerable times of their lives.

“Our aim is to sing loud and proud to end the stigma of mental health issues in pregnancy.”

Sarah added: “Donations of this kind are greatly appreciated as it enables us to continue providing essential support to those in need.

“Anyone wishing to support us can join Bridgend Baby Basics Facebook page.”
