Award is perfect recognition for Morriston Hospital's Estates champion

For almost 20 years, Jason Oliver has gone above and beyond in his role within Swansea Bay’s Estates team – now he has an award to prove it.

Since October 2006, Jason has been part of the Estates team in Morriston Hospital, with a wide range of responsibilities as part of his role.

Whether it’s assessing the site’s mechanical firefighting systems, maintaining the helipad, working with specialist contractors or responding to several significant incidents including critical medical gas and ventilation service failures, no two days are the same.

Jason’s work is felt across all services, and this has been highlighted during his success at The Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management (IHEEM) Wales Regional Awards, where he was named Estates Champion of Champions.

Jason, who is the Mechanical Estates Officer, said: “I was really surprised to have not only been nominated, but to win.

“I was actually on leave at that time, but it was a lovely surprise.

“The best elements of my job is the variety and impact the role has on patient care and staff wellbeing. No two days are the same and you never know what to expect when you come in to work.

“The sense of responsibility and contributing to making a difference, knowing what we do behind the scenes to help keep critical services running, is very rewarding.

“The teamwork and collaboration which is required with clinical staff, contractors, departments and other health boards to successfully carry out maintenance, compliance and repairs to resolve issues and continually improve and drive standards upwards is something that really motivates me.

“Apart from dealing with day-to-day estates duties, pre-planned maintenance and reactive call activities, I also hold a number of Appointed Person (AP) roles, which includes AP for Decontamination and Deputy Responsible Person for Water at Morriston Hospital.

“The range of responsibilities really makes sure that I’m dealing with something different every single shift.”

Sharon Williams, Operational Decontamination Lead within Infection Control, nominated Jason for the award, which recognises a member of the Estates and Facilities team who has gone above and beyond their job specification to improve the patient environment.

Sharon said: “Jason approaches every responsibility with a helpful, solutions‑focused attitude and is highly respected both within the health board and by external partners.

“Across all aspects of his work, Jason ensures that patient safety and wellbeing remain central to his decision‑making.

“His dedication is particularly evident within decontamination services across the health board, where his expertise and leadership have strengthened operational resilience and governance.

“As an on‑call manager, his swift and decisive actions are essential in maintaining core services and ensuring patient safety during high‑pressure situations.

“Jason’s work ethic is exemplary, and I’m incredibly grateful for everything he’s done for our decontamination services. He’s the person so many of us turn to whenever other issues arise, and his willingness to help never goes unnoticed.”
