Children, particularly those who are very young or have long-term health conditions, can be made very ill by the flu.
Children aged two up to Year 6 in primary school are entitled to a free vaccination. They are given the Fluenz nasal spray instead of the vaccination.
It contains live flu virus designed to make the body produce antibodies. BUT the virus has been weakened so the vaccination cannot cause the flu.
As with the injected flu vaccination, the nasal spray can leave children feeling under the weather, maybe with a slight fever and aches and pains. They may also have a runny or sniffy nose.
These symptoms should disappear after a couple of days.
The school vaccination programme for primary school pupils is underway.
Please see this link which takes you to a list of the dates vaccinators will be visiting local schools.
