Avoiding deconditioning in hospital

The Health Board recognises the critical importance of maintaining the physical and emotional well-being of our patients during their hospital stay. Deconditioning, a state of physical decline resulting from prolonged bed rest and inactivity, poses significant risks to patient health and can be responsible for increased risk of falls, pressure ulcers and infections.

We encourage visitors to actively engage in meaningful visits that may include taking patients off the ward when safe and appropriate, as well as mobilising patients when their condition permits.

By involving visitors in the care and mobility of our patients, we aim to reduce the potential for deconditioning, enhance the patient experience, and contribute to better health outcomes. Staff should provide guidance to visitors on safe and suitable activities, ensuring a collaborative approach to patient care and recovery.
