Weight Management

We understand that getting to a healthier weight and sticking to it can be hard, but we are here to support you. There are many physical and mental wellbeing benefits linked to a healthier weight and being more active. It can reduce your chances of developing many health conditions, it helps you sleep better, decreases your stress levels and improves your energy and mood.

The Swansea Bay University Health Board’s Nutrition and Dietetic Service offer a 4-week virtual group intervention that is aimed at giving you the information, skills and knowledge that you will need to be able to make healthy lifestyle changes in order to lose weight.

We realise that you are the experts in your own life therefore we want to be able to empower you to plan and undertake your own weight management journey. With the information we will provide, will be able to decide what changes you want to make in order to lose weight. You will be able to make and manage your own personal goals and ambitions. The group is the tool to enable you to make your own changes.

The group focuses on giving you the skills and knowledge to change your eating behaviours and learning how to adopt a sustainable healthier lifestyle for you to keep on losing weight and keep it off. Throughout the programme, you will learn how to improve your relationship with food, gain more insight into what drives you to eat, what factors affects weight, and you share experience with other participants in a supportive, friendly atmosphere.

The weight management group covers some of the following topics:

  • Exploring different types of hunger
  • Look at what type of eater you are
  • Taking the first steps to weight loss
  • Energy balance
  • Regular meals
  • Food portion sizes
  • Simple swaps
  • Psychological & emotional barriers to weight loss and strategies to overcome these
  • Relationship between stress & sleep and its impact on weight management
  • How to recognise urges and cravings and how to manage them
  • How to deal with setbacks
  • Weight maintenance

Please note: we are unable to provide any weight loss medications such as Mounjaro, Sexenda or Wegovy (injectable medications) or provide advice for patients already taking or about to start taking Mounjaro, Sexenda or Wegovy via NHS or private prescription.

 

A very limited amount of one to one virtual / telephone appointments are available for patients who are unable to take part in the virtual group.

We appreciate that you may be on one of our waiting lists currently; please be assured that we are doing our best to reach you as soon as possible.

 

What we expect from you

We expect you to be activated to make changes to your lifestyle with the information you will gain from the group. We expect you to commit to joining the full 4-week programme and attend the weekly 1.5hr sessions delivered via Microsoft teams.

 

What we do not provide

  • We are unable to provide any weight loss medications such as Mounjaro Sexenda or Wegovy (injectable medications)
  • We are unable to provide advice for patients already taking or about to start taking Sexenda or Wegovy via NHS or private prescription
  • Support for patients who are accessing another weight management programme
  • Access to weight loss surgery
  • Weekly meal plans

 

If you are purchasing weight loss medication yourself, we advise you to speak with a Health Care Professional in the first instance.

Some private companies offer weight loss medication, but for your safety, please only purchase from safe, trusted places. Follow this link to check the government website to make sure the company is safe.

Weight loss medication should only be prescribed with information and support about healthy eating, staying active and side effects.

 

How do I access the service?

From the 1st February 2026, we will offer self-referral into the weight management service, please read the information below and complete the form. The self-referral form will be available here from 1st February 2026.

If you have already completed our group or 1:1 appointments look at the ‘not for you’ section or discuss other options with your GP.

To access support from our service you must:

  • Be motivated and ready to make dietary and lifestyle changes
  • Be committed to attend your appointments
  • Be a resident of Swansea or Neath Port Talbot
  • Be aged 17.5 years or over
  • Not have an eating disorder
  • Are not pregnant and are not breastfeeding
  • Have not had bariatric (obesity) surgery
  • Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of above 30kg/m2 (South Asian BMI over 25kg/m2 plus 1 other health condition) or a BMI above 28kg/m2 plus 1 other health condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol.
  • Live within the Swansea Bay University Health Board area.  

 

Before you get started with the self-referral form you will need the following pieces of information: 

The form should take around 20-25 minutes to complete and on the last page you will need to click 'submit'.

If you are unable to complete the online form, you can call our team to self-refer by telephone where a member of our team will complete the form with you. Please make sure you have the information as mentioned above to hand. Call 01639 862068 lines may be busy therefore please leave a message and we will get back to you.

Children under 17.5 years who are overweight or obese can be referred to The Lighthouse Children and Young Persons Weight Management Service. A referral can be made by any Healthcare Professional to this service.  

 

What to expect after referral & Waiting Times

You will receive confirmation when you submit your form – you can save this for your own records.

Due to current demand for our services, waiting lists are longer than usual.

We will contact you via letter as soon as possible to ask you to telephone our service to book onto a group, this may take up a significant amount of time (around 6 months) due to demand. We appreciate this is a long time, and hope that you will find the recommended resources below helpful while you wait. We understand this may be frustrating or disappointing, and we are doing our best to see you as soon as we can.

Please do not complete the self-referral form if you have previously submitted one as we are unable to filter duplicate referrals.

 

While you are waiting

While you are waiting to be seen by the service, we ask that you look at the Healthy Weight Healthy You website (details below) to start your weight management journey.
