General Medicine and Neuro Outpatients Service

Image shows a patient looking at information.

The adult general medicine and neuro outpatient service is based in Neath Port Talbot Hospital. We provide goal directed therapy and assessment for people presenting with changes to their speech, language, communication and/or swallow.

For all therapy, we encourage full engagement and consent from the person receiving treatment, and when needed, their key people, for example, communication partners or carers. This is to maximise the positive effects of therapy and improve the outcome.

What we do

  • Assess, treat and support communication difficulties involving speech (dysarthria, dyspraxia of speech, dysfluency), and language (aphasia).
  • Assess, manage and rehabilitate eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties (dysphagia)
  • Access fibreoptic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) or videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS) to guide management of swallowing if needed.
  • Work as part of the Parkinson’s Disease MDT at Gorseinon Hospital and provide evidenced based intervention to support speaking with a louder voice.
  • Assess, make and support the use of paper based and mid-tech Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems.
