Jaw exercises

Remedial jaw exercises

The purpose of these exercises is to train the discs of the jaw joints to behave normally and move only into their correct position. They will also help to eliminate muscle spasms and unfavourable jaw posturing. In many cases, this alone will resolve your symptoms.

  1. Sit in front of a mirror and practice opening your mouth in a straight line, without your jaw deviating to either side.
  2. Apply pressure with your finger and thumb to the front of your chin, pushing it backwards (as if to your throat). Keep this pressure on firmly and practice opening and closing your mouth (in a straight line as above).

Remember

When carrying out the exercises above, if your jaw is painful you may find it helpful to lie down or sit comfortably and apply preliminary warmth with hot water bottles to both jaw joints and the sides of your face for approximately 5 minutes before starting again.
