Removal of facial skin lesion information

This information has been designed to improve your understanding of any forthcoming treatment and contains answers to many of the commonly asked questions. If you have any other questions that this does not answer or would like further explanation please ask.

You have a lesion of skin on your face or scalp that requires removal.

What does the operation involve?

The area will be frozen using a local anaesthetic injection, the lesion will be removed and sent for diagnosis. Sometimes a skin graft is needed but your surgeon will advise you of this at the time.

What should I expect afterwards?

There will be pain, discomfort, and swelling and bruising, you may need to take painkillers.

Do I need to take time of work?

You can drive yourself to hospital on the day of your operation, but if the lesion to be removed is close to your eye it would be best if you could bring somebody with you to drive you home in case your vision is altered by any swelling. Depending on the type of work you do it may be best to take the rest of the day off.

Before you leave you will be given full after care instructions.

Please call the maxillofacial Surgery reception 01792 702222 and ask for the on call maxillofacial surgeon should you have any concerns.
