Speech And Language Therapy - adults

Our speech and language therapists work closely with and accept referrals from the integrated MDT (multi disciplinary team), GPs and nurses in nursing homes.

The team work with patients with communication and swallowing difficulties as a result of an acute, acquired or a progressive disorder, e.g stroke, head injury, Parkinson's, motor neurone disease.

We assess, advise, deliver therapeutic programmes and support clients to achieve their goals.

We will develop the individual’s communication skills through structured, functional programmes and access  communication passports and electronic communication aids and apps. We support each individual to reach their potential and communicate their needs and wishes and work closely with our colleagues and their families to achieve their goals.

Swallowing difficulties can be acute or chronic and unless managed effectively can result in reduced nutrition and hydration or chest infection. Speech and language therapists carry out specialist assessments and advise regarding positioning, feeding techniques and the safest diet and fluids to reduce the risk of aspiration, leading to chest infection.
